As she lay there bleeding out, we could hear the gut-wrenching screams coming from the other room that only a mother could produce. Just minutes earlier, it was just another day of looking for a murder suspect that our unit was tasked with. As we left the 2nd Division, a call came out over the radio. There was a shooting involving a small child. We were only about a minute away and were the first to arrive at the scene. We heard a TV on in the front room as we approached the house. With guns drawn, we banged on the door and announced our presence. There was no answer initially. In these situations, you pray it was just a prank call. As the relief was setting in, we saw a small boy peeking out the window. We waved at the little guy and asked him to come open the door. I could see the fear in his wide eyes. At this point, my heart sank…
